Week to Apr 10th

Virus deaths pass 100k, Nevertheless markets up, dollar down, Bernie drops out
MY CALL FOR THIS WEEK : SELL USDCAD

A four-day week where we saw equity markets surged on a slowing down of new COVID-19 cases in the US, a positive view from adviser Anthony Fauci, and more significantly in European countries ahead of the US curve, followed by further Fed stimulus up to $2.3 trillion to keep the economy on track. The stimulus of course had an effect on the dollar, down across the board. Yields initially rose with the Monday 7.5% rally but were capped by dollar weakness. OPEC duly cut production by 10%, but this was already priced in, and traders deems it to be insufficient, given the projected economic contraction due to the virus, and the Oil price collapsed again.

Next week is a new chapter. The long weekend will provide three more days (four in Europe) of new case data, probably confirming the continued decline of new cases, and the US experience can be extrapolated from this. Sometimes there are advantages to being last, and we can probably echo Winston Churchill in saying this is not the end, not even the beginning of the end, it is however, the end of the beginning.

Save any upsets good or bad in the medical situation, price action this week is likely to be primarily determined by earnings, with a good cross-sector sample (DAL, JNJ, UNH, AMD) in addition to the banks. Bank stocks have fallen much more than their earnings estimates would suggest, and the degree of PE ratio reversion will give a strong indication of medium-term market sentiment.

Mon Apr 6
Markets surged today after the doldrums, with SPX recording its sixth best day this century (two of the better days were in March). This was on increasingly clear evidence that the early countries in the curve were definitely seeing a tail-off in new cases, and that the US was sufficiently equipped to handle their curve. There was also a technical aspect in that the 38.2% retracement was breached, leaving the next barrier at 50%. SPX was up 7.5% on the day, its sixth best day of the century, and third best during this current crisis. The dollar had a quiet day, with only AUD and NZD notably reversing from their lows. Oil was sharply down after the postponement of the OPEC meeting, wiping out some of Friday’s gains. Gold continued to be counter-intuitive and was up 2.33% on the day. Bonds and JPY were however in line with the equity surge, both fell.

Tuesday April 7
Today was fairly flat as indices held onto Mondays gains. The virus stats were slightly positive, as the US reported a drop in new cases. USD however was sharply down as traders considered the effect of the Fed’s unprecedented loosening, with EUR leading the gains as new cases in Italy and Spain continued to fall. Gold reversed slightly, as did bonds, but Oil fell sharply again as traders were concerned about the OPEC delay, suggesting agreements had not been reached.

Wednesday April 8
Markets today welcomed left-wing Senator Sanders dropping out of the Democratic Presidential race, leaving the field clear for Joe Biden. Today was the turn of USD to be flatter, with a slight move down in EUR matched by a move up in GBP. We can’t really assign any reasons to this, other than technicals. Gold and bonds were down again, as was JPY reflecting the holding of Monday gains. Oil was sharply up, despite the EIA stock being worse than expected.

Thursday April 9
On the final day of the short Easter week, the Fed announced yet further stimulus to prop up the economy, and additional $2,300Bn including $1,200Bn in the so-called junk bond market. This inevitably boosted stocks, although only by about 1.5%, although this was enough to close as the best pre-Easter week since 1974. The muted response was not helped by another 6.6 million new Jobless Claims, and the Michigan Consumer Sentiment index falling to 71, a level last seen in the 2012 Euro crisis.

The easing caused an immediate and sharp drop in USD across the board, and the depression in 10-year yields had more effect than bond-stock rotation. CAD was down on the all-time low of -1.01 million new jobs, an amazing number equivalent to 2.7% of the population. Gold was up on the weaker dollar. Separately, OPEC announced cuts of 10mbpd (approximately 10% of output), but this was seen as not enough given the reduced demand from the crisis, and Oil crashed again.

Friday April 10
Equity, bond and commodity markets were totally closed, including futures, the only exception being NKY which rose slightly. Forex as expected was very quiet, the largest move being USDCAD, down 0.26%. Next week, European and Australian markets will be closed on Sunday. Earnings season starts on Tuesday with the big banks reporting, which may quantify some of the projected damage from the virus crisis.

WEEKLY PRICE MOVEMENT
DJIA was up 12.67% this week, its second best week since 1938 (the best was two weeks ago). The best forex trade was to buy AUDUSD, up 5.88%. Bitcoin hardly moved, and ETH moved less than the Dow. My call to buy GBPJPY paid off, up 1.57%. The running total after ten weeks (and five wins) is 4.06%. This week I am selling USDCAD based on the technicals, and also the weekend oil deal.

Note we use Google Finance data for daily movements, listing UUP as a proxy for DXY. All references to ‘the dollar’ are based on DXY. The equity and index prices are now based on the cash close each day. Recoveries in line were seen in most FANGs, but not NFLX, which has not really fallen like the others.

NEXT WEEK (all times are GMT)
(Calendar High volatility items are in bold)
  • COVID focus moves to US
  • Most important earnings season in decades opens
  • China GDP will indicate longer-term effects
  • OpEx Week
Everything is about earnings this week, so we have done a table of the major earnings releases this week, highlighting the reduced forecasts, and the current price. The final column shows how much more the price has dropped than the earnings estimates suggests it should have. As you can see from the final column, most companies have dropped further, ie their P/E ratios have fallen.

This is immediately visible in a column chart

We will fill in the actual moves this week and report next weekend, together with the following week’s earnings releases.

Monday April 13
Over the weekend, a new oil cut deal was announced, so expect volatility in the Oil price, as well as CAD and oil producers. Most countries except Japan and the US are closed today for Easter Monday. Week to Jan 17th

Earnings open positively, All-time highs again, Phase 1 China deal signed

Monday January 13
Another all-time high for SPX and NDX, with tech shares leading as the January effect continues unabated, warmed by the easing of US/Iran tensions. USD was up in line, with only EUR outperforming which led to DAX being the only index in the red. The haven trio of Gold, bonds and JPY were of course down, and Oil, which benefits from Middle East tension dropped sharply by over $2.

Tuesday January 14
First off the block in earnings is JPM, who along with C beat earnings and revenue estimates, leading to a divergence with DJIA up but SPX and NDX flattish, taking a breather from the rally. A Turnaround Tuesday for the haven trio, now up, and Oil which recovered from the sharp drop. Otherwise only GBP was up in an overall flat day for the dollar as well.

Wednesday January 15
The mood cooled today with GS missing EPS substantially (4.69 vs 5.52) and BAC and Dow component UNH missing on revenue. SPX and NDX ended flat on the day. Nevertheless, JPY was flat in an otherwise weak day for the dollar, possibly selling the news, as the China Phase One deal was signed on schedule. Gold and Bonds were still up, and Oil was flat after a brief spike down.

Thursday January 16
The largest company to report today was MS, another beat, and along with the Retail Sales beat at 1330, US markets resumed their climb. There was a sharp spike up and down on DAX after the ECB minutes. The only red index was FTSE as a result of GBP strength, the only currency (other than NZD) up today. Gold, JPY and Bonds were down, and Oil was up, all in line with the equity moves.

Friday January 17
The euphoria continued into Friday, with all markets rising, and DAX breaking its closing Jan 18 high, and coming with 40 points of a new high. Oil rose as expected. Bonds were down in line, although notably Gold and JPY (meaning NKY didn’t join the party) were up. The latter was particularly notable as DXY hit a new 2020 high, and was up against all other currencies. There were no significant earnings today.

WEEKLY PRICE MOVEMENT
In this risk-on rally week, the top performing index was unsurprisingly NDX, with a second week of outperformance by FANGs. Meantime USDJPY was the best performer for a second week. Crypto rallied, in particular ETH, up nearly 18%.

Note we use Google Finance data for daily movements, listing UUP as a proxy for DXY. All references to ‘the dollar’ are based on DXY. The equity and index prices are now based on the cash close each day.

NEXT WEEK (all times are GMT)

Together with MSFT this is 17% of NDX, the largest concentration in any one day of earnings season. Dow component TRV reports before the bell. There are also rate decisions in Norway and Indonesia. Week to Apr 12th

EU grant further Brexit delay, No ECB or Fed surprises, Strong start to earnings season

Mon Apr 08
Last week’s equity rally ran out of steam, and in the absence of important news, equity markets drifted. DAX was slightly down, other markets slightly up. The dollar was firmly down (DXY -0.31%) after two weeks of gains, and all currencies (and Gold) were up with a particularly strong showing from CAD, tracking Oil, which was up nearly 2% on concerns about Libyan politics and conflict.

It is pleasing to see the CAD/Oil link work so well, the loonie tracked black gold pretty much all this week, as seen in the chart below. Yields advanced slightly.
Tuesday April 09
A gloomy growth forecast from the IMF, and a Trump tweet threatening EU tariffs spooked markets, which pulled back today. The DAX move was particularly sharp on the tweet, as you would expect as 20% of the German index is autos, one of Trump’s well-known targets.

The dollar had a flat day, with a slight move up in JPY (and Gold) being matched fades in CAD (as Oil gave up some of Monday’s gains) and GBP (the usual reason). EUR and AUD were flat. Yields were down due to stock-bond rotation.

Wednesday April 10
Today was packed with events, but they had little effect on the market. The ECB and Fed offered nothing new, merely repeating their dovish rhetoric from previous months, and the mixed US CPI at 1230 (MoM beat 0.4% vs 0.3%, Core miss, MoM 0.1% vs 0.2%, YoY 2.0% vs 2.1%) was disregarded. Even the hefty EIA miss (7.03M v 2.29M) at 1430 had little effect on Oil which followed equities up, recovering some (Europe/Japan) or all (US) of Tuesday’s losses.

DXY slipped slightly (-0.11%) largely due to a GBP recovery after the GDP beat at 0830. EUR did crash 40 pips when ECB Draghi spoke at 1230, but this was recovered in four hours. Of course this may have been caused by the simultaneous CPI print (as CAD made a similar move, as did yields, which stayed down). Despite the equity recovery, Gold and JPY continued to advance, as counterintuitively did AUD.

Thursday April 11
Equities stalled today, with most markets flat. DAX and FTSE dumped at the European open, probably in disappointment at the Brexit 6-month (and not 12-month extension) but quickly recovered. The dollar was slightly up (DXY +0.26%) but evenly (all currencies down) up after positive comments on the US/China situation from TreasSec Mnuchin.

Despite flat indices, there were mixed messages from the usual indicators. JPY and Gold gave clear risk-on signals. The yen was the weakest currency today, and Gold fell 1.39%, its worst day this month. However, yields rose 3bp, and Oil gave up 2% from Wednesday’s high.

Friday April 12
The long awaiting earnings season opened with a bang with banking giant JPM beating estimates and filing the highest ever first quarter profit for a US bank. It added 4.6% on the day. WFC also beat on EPS but missed on revenue and its stock fell 2.6%. DIS gapped up 10% on news of their new streaming service. SPX is now only 0.81% off its all-time high, and NDX is only 0.45% away, a remarkable recovery from the December lows. A sharp rise in yields signalled further bond-stock rotation, and Oil followed stocks although giving up those gains into the close.

Other world indices followed suit with the exception of FTSE which collapse on a very strong GBP rally, although this faded after European equities closed. Overall DXY continued its downward trending for the week with all currencies up, except of course JPY (and Gold).

WEEKLY PRICE MOVEMENT
Equity markets were directionless for much of the week, only rallying on Friday. NDX was the best performer. In forex, USD finally had a pullback week, with DXY shedding 0.53%. The best performer was, unusually, AUDJPY up 1.21%.  FANGs were fairly flat, except for NFLX, which pulled back on the DIS streaming channel announcement. DIS was up 13% on the week, its best for 10 years. Cryptos went back to sleep after a couple of wild weeks.

Note we use Google Finance data for daily movements, listing UUP as a proxy for DXY. All references to ‘the dollar’ are based on UUP. The equity and index prices are now based on the cash close each day.
